SNOWDOWN SNOWNEWS FROM BOARD OF DIRECTORS

SNOWDOWN 2021 HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Dear Beloved Snowdown Fans and Participants:

It is with a heavy heart that the Snowdown Board of Directors has reluctantly and unanimously voted to pass a motion to cancel the 43rd Annual Winter Celebration. Countless hours of discussions took place, while reaching out to other leaders in our community, seeking input and guidance. We contemplated alternatives, explored possibilities and hoped for some sort of easy answer or solution. But, the most responsible decision that we could reach was to not hold Snowdown 2021.

For 42 consecutive years, Snowdown Durango has boldly fulfilled its mission to promote fun, commerce and tourism (in that order) for the Durango community, bringing joy, absurdity, smiles, laughs and a much-needed economic boost to the area.

As you know, Snowdown thrives on large gatherings, packed bars and restaurants and streets lined with revelers. We cannot in good conscience promote ANY of those things without endangering the community we love.

As you may not know, the planning for Snowdown continues year round. We considered not only the week of Snowdown; but, countless planning meetings, rehearsals and other activities in the months prior to Snowdown. Those too would require additional meetings in the name of Snowdown.

The Board of Directors also felt a responsibility to make this decision sooner, rather than later, given the significant impact on local businesses, on out of town visitors and event planners, we felt a responsibility to give these groups and individuals time to prepare accordingly.

You and your participation in Snowdown are what define our annual winter celebration. We will miss you on the streets and establishments of Durango, celebrating in the costumed creative spirit unique to Snowdown. We are looking forward to Snowdown 2022. It will be epic!!!

In the meantime, we would like to encourage everyone to contribute to our local businesses in any way that you can: buy gift cards, order takeout; or, support your favorite event host by purchasing from that host business or non-profit. Our community needs us and we need them.
